Complete QB Baltimore MD-Day Two
Baltimore MD-Day Two
It was another beautiful day for a Complete QB camp. The coaches did a quick overview of some drill from yesterday.
The first session consisted of doing roll out drills, coverage overview, clock management drills in which the younger kids really enjoyed.
It ended with in the classroom with going over film recording each campers drop step and throwing mechanics.
The second session started back inside doing chalk talk. We went back back to the field to do rollout drills, Quick release overview, and 7on 7 games. The 5th through 8th Graders played 3 on 3. Coach John-Sandy's team defeated Coach Akande's team in a good match.
The day ended in giving out T-shirts and the coaches announcing the Hustle Award winners who were Jackson(High Schoolers) and Barrett (5th through 8th Grade).
It was a great camp and a special thanks goes to Coach Davis, Delano and, Luke.
We look forward to going back next year.

Baltimore, MD- July 14th, 2009
After arriving to the hotel in Baltimore at close to midnight and getting a few hours of shut-eye, the Complete QB staff arrived at Kelly Field at Calvert Hall High School at a quarter to eight. We were greeting by coach Davis helped us get everything set up to start the camp.
This was the first time since 2006 that we did the Baltimore camp. We had a small group but they were from various regions. We had kids representing the states of Maryland, New Jersey, Upstate New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania.
Even with the hot sun basking on the turf field making it feel much hotter than it actual temperature, the kids had a really productive day and were great to work with. Coach Enrique Pizzaro worked with the high schoolers and Coach Segun Akande worked with the 5th through 8th graders.
The day went extemely fast. The kids learned a lot and had fun to boot. Usually it takes a hot second for the coaches to learn everyone's name,s but having three guys named Brandon in Coach Pizzaro's group made it a bit easier.
The live route session went really well. Everyone walked off the field at 2:30 with a great feeling of accomplishment for the day.
In the evening the coaches went to a restaurant called Glory Days where we ate dinner and watched the end of the MLB All-Star Game.

Grove City, OH - Day Two (aka: The Last Day)
We checked out of the hotel at 7:45 am because after today's session we are driving directly to Lexington, Ky to catch our flight back to Newark.
We got to Grove City Christian School ready and excited for Day 2 of Camp. Even in the 90 degree plus heat the Quarterbacks were all hard at work. We decided not to interrupt the field time and changed the structure of the day to allow Camp to remain outdoors for the entire morning session. Both classroom sessions were moved it back to the second half of the day and I think the Quarterbacks enjoyed being outdoors and running drills all morning.
The afternoon session started with video review with Coach Johnston and chalk talk. Then, you guessed it, the Quarterbacks headed back outside for 7 on 7 scrimmages. We had a great group of kids in Grove City and I really enjoyed this Camp.
As always, I want to congratulate the Complete QB Grove City, OH Hustle Award winners and send a special thanks to Coach Clyde Lucas and the Grove City Christian School for hosting us.

Grove City, OH - Day One:
After a night of not-so friendly competition (Coach Johnston takes his putting very seriously) at a miniature golf course in Columbus, the Complete QB Coaches stepped on the field for an usual 1 pm start. We finally had a beautiful, sunny day outside and we were greeted by Quarterbacks from not only Ohio but 4 other states including Utah!
The campers were sharp and attentive. In each group there were a couple of Quarterbacks with strong arms. I was prepared to watch some great action on the field with many talented athletes. Coach Stratton joined us at this site (he was also in St. Louis) for his second shot at working a Complete QB Camp. We were also joined by Coach Williamson and Coach Wolf, both of whom have worked this Camp in the past.
The day went pretty fast and was very productive. It was clear very early who the talents were on the field and I think the coaches were more excited about the next day's 7 on 7 than the Quarterbacks who would be participating.
After Camp the coaches dined at an Italian restaurant, Baru which was highly recommended by Coach Stratton. It was a great suggestion as we talked and laughed over family-style Italian cuisine.

Next Stop - Columbus, OH:
After a late night of of playing dominoes (in which Coach Pizzaro was victorious) we are getting ready to head to Columbus, OH for our last mid-west camp.
A possible pit stop may be in Indianapolis to visit former Syracuse University wide receiver, Taj Smith, who is currently working out with the Indianapolis Colts.
It a nice day out and I am hoping for nice weather in Grove City.
Talk to you then...

Lombard, IL - Day Two:
Coach Ryan Larson stretched out the campers on the field hoping for an entire day outside on the field. With black clouds moving over us, lightning and sounds of a siren (which we thought was a fire engine but later found out it was actually a tornado warning) we had to take the camp inside the field house.
We started the afternoon session indoors, watching film and doing station drills. Finally the decision was made to take the group back out on the field to complete the rest of the afternoon session. The 5th and 6th grade group seemed to enjoy the 7 on 7 scrimmage more than the others, diving in muddy areas for balls, showing their hustle and passion for the game. The other groups were battling it out as well on the field.
Coach Johnston led the Quarterbacks, their parents and Coaches to the entrance of the field. T-Shirts were handed out and the Hustle Award Winners were announced. Congrats again to the Complete QB Lombard, IL Camp Hustle Award winners!
Thanks to Coach Andriano and his staff for allowing us to use the Montini High School facilities for Camp.

Lombard, IL - Day One:
The coaches met downstairs in the hotel lobby at 7:05am (TBS Time...Smile) and we headed over to Montini Catholic High School where we were greeted by Coach Andriano. We waited to begin check-in in hopes of clearer skies. Unfortunately, that did not happen and we encountered yet another morning with rainy weather. The morning breezed by, despite being indoors, with hard working Quarterbacks from all over Illinois and neighboring, Indiana. This was another Camp where we had a good number of returning campers.
Thankfully, the skies cleared after lunch and we were able to have a move outside for the rest of the morning session and entire afternoon. Quarterbacks obviously enjoy being outdoors and I think the afternoon session moved much quicker because of this.
After Camp Coach Pizzaro and I played Coach Johnston and Coach O'Flaherty in 2-on-2. With Coach Pizzaro and I winning two games to none!

On the Road to Lombard:
Coach Johnston and Coach Pizzaro got up early and went to the hotel fitness center to workout before we left St. Louis. I joined them for breakfast and we left St. Louis around 2 pm.
On a Complete QB journey there are five things I can guarantee:
1) A lot of jokes
2) Conversations about the previous Camp.
3) Ideas about how to improve Camp in general.
4) A stop at someone's favorite fast food restaurant.
5) A story about a past Complete QB journey.
We got to Lombard, IL at about 8pm. We settled in, got something to eat and relaxed at the hotel. I was finally able to catch up with HUNDREDS of e-mails.

St. Louis - Day Two:
It was another dreary morning in St. Louis, but in the spirit of Complete QB we made the best of it. The day started indoors, the Quarterbacks still threw a lot of footballs and had a classroom film review where Coach Johnston highlighted the strengths and areas of improvement for each Quarterback who attended. All campers are filmed while completing a 5-step drop and pass. This is one of the most appreciated facets of the two-camp and is always well received by the Quarterbacks, their parents and coaches.
After the lunch the weather finally cleared up enough to allow Complete QB to take the Camp on the field to run pass route drills, coverage overview and of course the infamous "7 on 7" scrimmages. It was great to finally get outside.
It was a great two-day session in St. Louis, MO and Complete QB would like to thank Coach Jake Parent and his staff for hosting us and our Quarterbacks.
Special recognition to our Complete QB St. Louis, MO Hustle Award winners!
One more note, that I would be amiss to leave out. The coaches managed to sneak in a St.Louis Cardinals baseball game before ending our time in St. Louis.

St. Louis, MO - Day One:
I rose out of bed this morning a few minutes before 6am and saw we were dealing with a rainy day as I peeked out of our hotel window. As we left the hotel at a quarter to 7, the rain had already started to come down.
Coach Johnston, Pizzaro, O'Flaherty and myself all discussed the game plan of moving Camp indoors. This was one of few rainy days Complete QB has encountered, but we were ready for it. We arrived at St. Mary's High School and were greeted by Coach Jake Parent, Head Varsity Football Coach. Quarterbacks arrived early as usual and soaked from the pouring rain outside.
We met our Quarterbacks and discovered they had traveled from different parts of Missouri and 4 other states.
The group in St. Louis was small, but they were eager to learn and work hard. They benefited from the additional personal attention available with a smaller group and seemed to enjoy the drills of Day One, even though we were in a gymnasium. The 5th and 6th graders shined in the classroom session and enjoyed the teachings of Coach O'Flaherty.
We had a great day despite being inside. Hopefully the weather will be nicer tomorrow so we can get out on the field.
After Camp all of the coaches went to Chimichanga's for lunch and some intense gridiron conversation.

Off to St. Louis:
After a great two days in Lexington, KY it was time to depart and head to our next destination: St. Louis. A special thanks goes to the coaches we left behind as we head for the 2nd of our mid-west camps. Our gratitude goes to: Coach Mike Engler, Coach Bill Letton, Coach Tyler Hancock, Coach Nigel Smith and the rest of the Lexington Catholic staff for hosting the Camp.
We embarked on our journey to St. Louis at about 3 pm. The 5-hour drive consisted of a ton of laughs, fast food and multiple pit stops sponsored by Aquafina (smile).
We checked into the hotel with just enough time to rush to our rooms to catch the second half of the Laker/Magic game and grab a bite to eat.
This is Coach John-Sandy, signing out until tomorrow.

Lexington, KY - Day Two:
It was a hot, sunny day today in Lexington, KY as the campers joined us on the field at 8:30 in the morning. Today, Quarterbacks covered 3-step and 5-step drop drills and coverage drills. There was chalkboard talk, film review and finally the "7 on 7". It was clear the favorite part of Camp for all the Quarterbacks are the 7 on 7s where they actually get to apply everything they've learning in a game-like situation.
After taking to some of the Quarterbacks, I found all the kids were really happy with what they learned over the past two days. I overheard parents discussing how impressed they were with the structure and organization of the Camp. There were a couple of high school coaches in attendance (as observers) and they informed me they also learned great drills to bring back to their school to help prepare for their upcoming season.
Coach Johnston felt that this two day session was one of the best of his ten year tenure as the Complete QB Director.
A fun moment for the coaches is naming the Quarterback who earns the Hustle Award for each group. The award is given to one Quarterback who the coach deems to be the hardest worker or has the "most hustle" during the two-day Camp.
Congratulations to this year's Complete QB Lexington, KY Hustle Award winners!

Lexington, KY - Day One:
The Quarterbacks arrived bright and early, eager to have a good session. They traveled from 4 states and all over Kentucky to join us for the first of our 4 mid-west camps. We also welcomed back a number of returning Quarterbacks with plans to improve in the off-season.
Coach Johnston oversaw the entire camp, leading large group sessions and assisting with Quarterbacks while they ran drills. Each of the other staff coaches were assigned to grade level groups to ensure that all Quarterbacks get the required attention only possible in a small group.
Coach O'Flaherty worked with 7th and 8th graders and Coach Pizzaro with 11th and 12th graders. For this camp Coach Nigel Smith worked with 9th and 10th graders, while Coach Tyler Hancock worked with 5th and 6th grade Quarterbacks. I roamed around assisting where needed, camera in hand and taking notes.

The Journey Begins:
The Complete QB 2009 Camp tour started at 1:30 am when I met up with Coach Johnston in Brooklyn, NY. I hopped in his car and we drove to Jersey City, NJ to meet Coach Ryan O'Flaherty and Coach Enrique "Buff" Pizarro in front of Hudson Catholic High School.
From there we proceeded to Newark Airport to catch a 5:05 am flight to Lexington, KY. Upon arriving at the airport we found out our flight got canceled. As Louisville is 70 miles away from Lexington, we rerouted and flew into Louisville and rented a car and drive for the hour and a half hour drive. We all agreed it was better than hanging out in the airport all day.
We arrived in Lexington at 11 am and went straight to Lexington Catholic High School which is the site of the Lexington, KY Complete QB Camp. We met up with Coach Mike Engler, Coach Nigel Smith, and others. We ended the night with a good meal and the Kentucky State High School Baseball playoffs which unfortunately got delayed due to thunderstorms.
